Local drug and alcohol prevention coalition meetings are held regularly in the communities of Norfolk, Stanton and West Point. Please contact us to be a part of the coalition meetings!

WHO IS HCI?

Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI) coalition was started in 2003 by a group of parents and professionals who were concerned about drug and alcohol problems in the four county service area. The Cuming and Madison County coalitions meet regularly to discuss current issues and plan activities in the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse and misuse in youth and adults.  

HCI is a recognized Nebraska non-profit corporation and is governed by a board of directors. The current HCI Board of Directors are:

  • Addisen Johnson - Cuming County Diversion Coordinator, Cuming County
  • Dr. Linda Hunter - Northeast Nebraska Psychological Services, PC, Burt County
  • Heather Claussen- Northeast Community College, Madison County
  • Leticia Rodriguez - Hispanic Liaison, Madison County
  • Kate Richards- Richards Ag Agency Inc., Burt County
  • Michael Petersen - Parent, Stanton County
  • Brandon Franklin - State of Nebraska District 7 Probation, Madison County
  • Mollie Spotanski - Youth, Stanton County

WHAT DOES HCI DO?

  • Educate and distribute printed materials on drug and alcohol abuse and misuse for all age groups
  • Fund compliance and sobriety checks performed once a year by the Nebraska State Patrol
  • Media campaigns focusing on underage drinking and drinking and driving held at peak times such as prom, graduation and the holiday season
  • Host booths at county fairs, health fairs, school events, and other public events
  • Help local outreach committees to expand our reach   
  • Collect and analyze data to determine current drug abuse trends

OTHER FREE SERVICES:

  • Evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs dealing with drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, good choices, and leadership skills at many of our area schools. Would you like to get one of these programs into your school? Call us!
  • Prescription Drug Take-Back- Two permanent collection boxes have been placed at the West Point Police Department and the Norfolk Police Department to collect outdated, unwanted or unused prescription drugs. Click here for more information. Hours of operation for each location are as follows:

           West Point Police Department: Monday - Friday from 9am to 5pm 

           Norfolk Police Department: Anytime 24/7

  • FREE Responsible Beverage server training for businesses selling or serving alcohol to help stop underage drinking and excessive drinking. Call to get your class scheduled today! 
  • Expert speakers on drug and alcohol abuse are provided for schools, organizations, and businesses. If you would like to host a speaker, let us know!
  • Fatal Vision Goggle events are performed at local high schools. This is available to any school in our area upon request.
  • Drug Identification Board display is available to any school or community in our service area upon request.
  • Videos on current drug abuse topics are available to schools and local organizations.
  • Numerous educational resources on alcohol and other drugs are available.

WHERE DOES HCI GET ITS MONEY?

  • Region 4 Behavioral Health Systems Block Grant
  • Partnership for Success Grant (PFS)
  • Public and private donations

CAN I JOIN HCI?

Yes! Anyone can join HCI and there are no dues or fees!
