Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department (ELVPHD) was awarded a diabetes prevention program grant by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to bring professional education to the area and provide a community education program for those at risk for diabetes. During 2013, ELVPHD conducted a community health assessment (survey) which asked adults in Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton counties about health-related matters that were most important to them. The survey found that diabetes was the 6th highest rated health concern in our service area. Also, 33.9% of survey participants’ self-reported weight measures showed that they were obese, which is a major diabetes risk factor (compared with 28.4% obesity rate for Nebraska).
This project will help meet the needs of our community by training health professionals education program to teach people how to make meaningful changes to reduce their risk. The health department will partner with the Midtown Health Center and other area clinics to train health professionals and start the community classes. Please contact us if you are a nurse or other health professional and would like to learn more about the Diabetes Prevention Program training being planned for June 18th and 19th. If you are at risk for diabetes and would like to be notified of the community education program please call 402-529-2233.
