In March, Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department (ELVPHD) hosted a Tai Chi renewal class for their volunteer instructors at the Methodist Church in Norfolk. During the class, the instructors were led by Holly Warth, RN and certified Tai Chi instructor. They practiced techniques and discussed new ideas for teaching and marketing the program. In addition to the 8 current instructors who received renewal training, ELVPHD is also working with 4 new instructors who will be receiving training in April. The new Tai Chi instructors will then be able to teach classes in their communities to expand Tai Chi offerings in the health district.
ELVPHD has helped to provide community Tai Chi classes throughout the health district for over five years. Tai Chi is an evidence-based practice that is designed to improve balance and strength. The goal of the program is to decrease falls among residents– especially for those over the age of 65. Classes are regularly held in senior centers and other public venues by a team of 8 dedicated volunteer instructors.
Expanding Tai Chi classes within ELVPHD’s counties (Madison, Stanton, Cuming and Curt) helps to achieve one of the priority areas of the health department’s Community Health Improvement Plan. Of the individuals who have participated in past classes, 56% improved their movement assessment scores from the beginning to the end of the class series.
Funding for this project is provided by the Department of Health and Human Services - Tai Chi Moving for Better Balance. If you are interested in participating in a Tai Chi class please call 402-529-2233.
