Radon is a natural gas in soil and rock that you cannot see or smell. It can enter your home through holes and cracks in the basement floor, walls, or from well water and is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer. During the period, December 2020 to April 2021, Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department (ELVPHD) distributed 178 radon kits throughout the health district. Of the kits returned to the lab for analysis, the average radon level was 12.1 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The results ranged between 0.3 to 49.8 pCi/L. Overall, 52% of the homes tested yielded a high result. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that radon mitigation occur for homes with a radon level of 4.0 pCi/L or higher.
For individuals who would like a short-term radon test, Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department (ELVPHD) has discounted test kits available for sale year-round for $8.00 plus tax.
