Staying Active This Summer

Friday, June 19, 2015

Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department’s Operation Heart to Heart program has served 1,457 people so far during 2015 with heart health educational presentations, blood pressure screenings and lifestyle change health coaching services within Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton Counties.  An important part of adopting a healthier lifestyle is choosing to increase the amount of time you are active each day.  With that in mind, we are encouraging families to move more by following these 7 simple steps for safe summer physical activity:

  • Ease in to summer by letting your body adapt to the heat gradually and drink plenty of water
  • Dress for the heat by wearing lightweight clothing and remember to protect your eyes with sunglasses.
  • Have a plan for indoor exercise for those days when it is too hot or humid to be active outdoors.
  • Exercise smarter, not harder by being active during the cooler parts of the day such as morning or evening.
  • Adults should strive for at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity.
  • Team up with friends, family or pets when exercising to keep you motivated.
  • Take time to build some muscle by including strength training exercise in your program.
