The AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation’s Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM program today announced a grant of $250,000 to the Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department to support its Operation Heart to Heart program. Health department rewards community members for input on health survey

The Elkhorn Logan Valley Health Department recently concluded efforts to gather the public’s input in a community health survey. Each household in the counties of Burt, Cuming, Madison, and Stanton received a postcard directing them to take the online survey. Those who took the survey were eligible to enter for a chance to win one of four $200 grocery gift certificates. One winner was drawn at random from each county in the ELVPHD service area.

Medication Take Back Successful at PATCH Health Fair

Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI), a drug abuse prevention group that serves the counties of Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton in Nebraska, recently held a medication drug take back event at the PATCH Health Fair in Norfolk. A total of thirty pounds of expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications were turned over to a Norfolk police officer at the HCI booth in a two hour period. Properly disposing of excess or unused drugs is everyone’s responsibility as a matter of public safety.

Radon Test Results Released

Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department has completed its 2013 radon kit distribution and analysis for returned kits for Burt, Cuming, Madison and Stanton Counties. Over 300 home owners picked up free home radon test kits during January and February of 2013. Of those that completed the test kit and sent it in for analysis, results showed that the average picocurie per liter (pCi/L) was 6.7 in Burt County, 6.2 in Cuming County, 8.6 for Madison County and 7.7 for Stanton County. The recommended upper limit for testing is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The range for the kits sent in from the four counties this year was .7 – 31.5 (pCi/L).

Operation Heart to Heart Community Events

Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department’s Operation Heart to Heart program has been providing heart health education and case management services throughout Madison, Stanton, Burt and Cuming counties for nearly one year. One goal of the program is to reduce the rate of heart disease, increase health screenings and provide case management services for agricultural workers. The program also targets educating the general public on heart disease and provides free presentations and blood pressure screenings to organizations, businesses and events. Operation Heart to Heart has participated in over 80 screening and educational events throughout the year. There were 547 ag workers screened and 626 people provided with education on heart disease and blood pressure screenings.
